Hopper Flies

Hopper flies are absolutely fantastic terrestrial patterns that can produce some of the most exciting and explosive dry fly fishing you'll ever experience!
What Are Hopper Flies? Hopper flies imitate grasshoppers - those chunky, jumping insects that live in grassy areas near water. When they accidentally hop or get blown into the water, they create quite a commotion and represent a substantial meal for trout.

When to Fish Hoppers:
  • Season: Mid-summer through early autumn (July-September peak)
  • Time of Day: Particularly effective during warm afternoons
  • Weather: Breezy days when naturals get blown onto water
  • Location: Near grassy banks, meadows, agricultural areas
Fishing Techniques:
  • Aggressive Presentation: Don't be afraid to land them with a bit of a splash!
  • Twitching: Give occasional twitches to imitate struggling movement
  • Bankside Casting: Target areas close to grassy banks and overhanging vegetation
  • Be Ready: Takes are often explosive and aggressive!
Why They're So Effective: Hoppers represent a massive protein source for trout - much larger than most aquatic insects. When trout see a struggling hopper, they often can't resist the easy meal, leading to some absolutely thrilling surface strikes.

  • Target undercut banks and shaded areas
  • They work brilliantly as attractor patterns even when no naturals are present
