Standard Lures

Lures are streamers and other flies that imitate baitfish, leeches, and other prey that predatory fish chase! These are some of the most exciting flies to fish because they often trigger aggressive strikes from big fish.

Casting Technique:

  • Cast across stream or across the current
  • Quartering downstream often works best
  • Let the fly sink to desired depth before starting retrieve
  • Mend your line to control drift and depth

  • Retrieve Methods:

    1. Strip Retrieve (Most Common):
    • Pull line with your non-rod hand in short, sharp strips
    • Vary strip length - short twitches to long pulls
    • Pause between strips - often triggers strikes
    • Keep rod tip low and pointed toward fly
    2. Hand-Twist Retrieve:
    • Slow, steady hand-over-hand line gathering
    • Creates continuous movement without jerky action
    • Perfect for leeches and slow-moving prey imitations
    3. Swing Method:
    • Cast across current and let fly swing downstream
    • Minimal retrieve - let current do the work
    • Classic wet fly technique - very effective!
