The Greenwell's Glory - now that's a true classic! This is one of the most famous and enduring dry fly patterns in the history of fly fishing, and for very good reason.
History & Heritage: Named after Canon William Greenwell, a 19th-century angler and fly tier, this pattern has been catching trout for well over 150 years. It's stood the test of time because it simply works!
Pattern Details:
  • Body: Dubbed with yellow-green or olive silk/thread
  • Hackle: Furnace hackle (black center with ginger/red edges) - this is the signature feature
  • Wing: Starling wing feathers or similar grey feathers
  • Hook: Typically sizes 12-16
  • Thread: Waxed yellow or primrose silk traditionally
What It Imitates: The Greenwell's Glory is a brilliant general imitation that can represent:
  • Various olive mayflies
  • Medium olive duns
  • Iron blue duns
  • General upwinged flies during hatches
When to Fish It:
  • Season: Absolutely deadly from April through September
  • Conditions: Perfect during olive hatches, especially on overcast days
  • Water: Excellent on both rivers and stillwaters
  • Time: Particularly effective during evening rises
Why It's So Effective: The furnace hackle is the secret weapon - those dark centers with lighter edges create an incredibly lifelike silhouette that trout find irresistible. The olive body color matches so many natural insects that it's like having multiple fly patterns in one.
Fishing Tips:
  • Fish it dead drift during hatches
  • Excellent as a searching pattern when you're not sure what's hatching
  • The distinctive hackle makes it easy to track on the water
  • Works brilliantly when trout are being selective
This is definitely one of those "must-have" patterns that belongs in every trout angler's box.
