What Are Beetle Flies?

Beetle flies imitate various types of beetles - those hard-shelled insects that live in vegetation around water and occasionally fall or get blown onto the surface. They represent a substantial meal for trout and often trigger aggressive strikes.
Key Characteristics:
  • Body: Usually black, brown, or dark-colored foam or dubbed bodies
  • Shell/Back: Often tied with a hard-looking back using deer hair, foam, or synthetic materials
  • Profile: Chunky, rounded appearance that sits low on the water

  • Legs: Sometimes include rubber legs or hackle fibers
Natural Behavior & Fishing Technique: Black beetle flies are particularly effective as they imitate land-based insects that fall into water from the bank. The recommended fishing technique is to let the fly drift naturally on the surface with occasional twitches to simulate a struggling beetle - this movement triggers trout strikes as it mimics a beetle that's fallen in and is trying to escape.
When to Use Them:
  • Season: Most effective during summer and early autumn
  • Location: Near bankside vegetation, overhanging trees, grassy areas
  • Time: Can work throughout the day, but often best during warm afternoons
  • Weather: Particularly good on breezy days when naturals get blown onto water
