I hope to be fishing in the SW Pyrenees in early September (Maleon/Tardets area). Fast flowing, mountain rivers. Any ideas on UK flies I should take as standbyes? Had a day in this area earlier in the year, the locals were fishing very small dry flies (18-20) on very fine tackle. Will obviously try to tap local knowledge if my French is up to it. But any ideas welcome!

As my comment below suggests, I have had great success on an apps bloodworm and intermediate line, I let the line sink for about 15 seconds (watch for takes on the drop, i missed a couple of takes on the drop, then got one on the drop), then I retrieved with a deadly slow figure-of-eight retrieve. This is my preferred method throughout the winter.

I would just like to thank you for the bloodworm fly you sent me because first cast with it, i caught a new personal best fish of 8lb. i then went on to catch many more fish in just a 2 hour session which placed me as top rod. fantastic fly! hence why i have ordered 4 more!

Im new to fly fishing and have been goin fishing for trout and havent had much luck, i was just wanting to know what flies i should be using in the winter and on what kind of line?

Hi Graham,
The best way is to take a look around at what flies are around, it can differ from the time of day weather etc. Daddy long legs are around in abundance at this time of year. You will be able to see if the fish are feeding on them. If the fish are raising completely out of the water they will be taking dry flies. If you just see the ripple water they are feeding subsurface.
I would suggest a little of each type in your box then check out the fish activity on the day.

hi Wendy, just to let you know i went to Scotland last August and hoped to catch a few trout, i was very dissapointed, visited quite a few lochs and never saw a single angler, most of the locals blamed the trout farms, i can not say for sure that this is the case, i would like to hear any comments, this year i am going to southern Ireland and try my luck, i hope i do better, i will keep you up dated. anyway thanks for your advice on choosing flies as i am very new to the sport, thanks alot John.
Had a great evening at Sutton Bingham this week, took out a boat for the first time, dad can’t do the walks now following ill health. Took all our fish on size 8 Cats Whiskers pulled back fast, takes whacked the rod round. We both filled our nets, so back for some more of those flies. What I couldn’t find on your web site were cormorants / booby cormorants much in use at Grafham – and I have used them elsewhere with some success.
I’m quite new to all this so there is probably a good reason why I couldn’t find them – your range seems pretty comprehensive. Any guidance would be appreciated.

i said i would be back!!!what have i let myself in for i have entered the wonderful world of river fishing. when i fish still waters i can cast relax and wait. i fish the river the fly goes one way the line goes another and it all seems in the lap of the gods where the current takes the lot. i cant get my leader to sink and my fly is constanly dragged under by the current. any advice anyone i’m determined to catch one of those wily wild brown trout. please help

troutflies is far and away the best site for buying flies(i should know as i buy alot!!) had my best day fishing so far using a white moth dry bought from this site. had 8 fish to 3lbs and lost 2 more. if only fishing was always this good. keep up the good work and no doubt i shall be buying more flies to use in the winter months (suggestions welcome!)

As a newbie to fly fishing my knowledge of what I want and more importantly need can be a little frustrating as I’m sure you’ll understand! Your prices allow me to make extra purchases to allow for the odd selection make, order extra sizes and colours. Your postage service and response is unbeatable also. I started off ordering from another mail order company, and, after receiving flies that appeared to look very dissimilar to their catalogue pictures and descriptions I decided to contact them. 3 unanswered e mails later I gave them one last chance to respond…they failed! I have now found your company and WILL not be looking back!
